About the hat designer/artist

Tomoko Tahara Archive is a collection of works, garments, and objects accumulated over time.

Founded on the work of milliner Tomoko Tahara, whose practice began in 1996, the archive brings together handcrafted hats alongside clothing and collected pieces selected for their design, craftsmanship, and individuality.

Over the years, Tahara's work has been presented in Tokyo, Vancouver, New York, London, and Amsterdam, and was recognized by Vogue UK through the Stephen Jones Millinery Award in 2011.

Today, the archive serves as a place for past works, personal collections, and objects that continue to hold value beyond their original moment.

Our hats

Tomoko Tahara began creating hats in 1996.

Working from a small studio in Vancouver, she developed a practice centered on materials, texture, and transformation.

Antique fabrics, vintage trims, found objects, and weathered surfaces often serve as starting points for her work. Rather than restoring materials to their original state, Tahara is interested in preserving the traces of time they carry. New materials are sometimes altered, dyed, or treated to achieve a similar sense of age and character.

Over the years, her hats have been presented in Tokyo, Vancouver, New York, London, and Amsterdam, and were recognized by Vogue UK through the Stephen Jones Millinery Award in 2011.

Each piece reflects an ongoing fascination with craftsmanship, individuality, and the beauty found in overlooked materials.
